Personal side
- What memory do you have of an incident when you experienced bias, prejudice, and/or oppression, or witnessed someone else as the target of bias, prejudice, and/or oppression? Keep in mind that one can encounter such incidents in real contexts, including online environments, as well as in fictional ones, such as movies, books, television shows, and the like.
- In what way(s) did the specific bias, prejudice and/or oppression in that incident diminish equity?
- What feelings did this incident bring up for you?
- What and/or who would have to change in order to turn this incident into an opportunity for greater equity?
A great memory that I have of a prejudice experience is not one of myself but one of a co-worker of mine. She actually was discriminated against because she was trying to go back to school to get her Credentials 1and 2 in child care, but since she was of Hispanic descent and gave her a big run around and was very shocked that she had all of her things that she needed to have in order to start. She was hurt, but I encouraged her and told her not to become discouraged and to keep striving for the top. She keep trying and trying until finally she got in and she starts in January. The situation diminish equity because it is sad when everyone can not get the same treatment because of their ethnic background. It shouldn't matter what background you come from if you are eligible for the opportunity being presented then you should be able to go forth with it no matter what. The feelings that I felt for the incident were sad, disappointed and discriminated against to because I feel like if you discriminate against one you discriminate against all. I sad that to say this it is hard for all races and if you have a heart then you will care about the next person being discriminated against. The person behind the scene would have to change because who is to say that she will not have to deal with another person with a Hispanic background or any background for that matter. Its all in being professional and doing your job.
